Tuesday, Aug 19

Hi!  It’s already the 21st! Do I even remember what happened on the 19th? It was an unexpectedly good day. We went to sleep Monday night with very light south winds and woke up to slightly more enthusiastic north-northeast winds that some birds were able to use to good advantage. Karen had to disappear about the time the birds stopped moving but we worked very steadily until lunch. Then the birds relatively went into “siesta mode” for a while. My feeling about 2/3 of the way through the day when I did a quick numbers count was “How did we stay so constantly busy with so few birds”?

No great surprises either in or out of the nets but the “Empi’s” (Empidonax flycatchers) certainly made a strong presentation. A Black-and-white Warbler brought us our first tick for the season and the Yellow Warbler return showed us some serious secondary molt (secondaries are flight feathers in the “middle” of the wing). For August, this was a very pleasant day!!

Great belated cheers from David and Angelo
