Great greetings from the “gorgeous as usual” Appledore Island! Monday was an incredibly usual sort of August bird day; no excitements in either species seen or banded, lots of “zero rounds” especially in the afternoon, very gentle numbers of all sorts. But a real cool front passed through Sunday night – Monday morning bringing NNE winds up to 30 mph when we opened nets. Happily most of our nets are well sheltered from that direction of wind and the thickness of vegetation helped to stop the wind before it reached the net lanes. By nightfall, the winds had gone light south and the feeling was – “Oh well, another wasted front!”

The most notable bird event of the day was probably the resident Barred Owl’s serenade as we left the station for sleeping. But the most notable event of the day was the bat before breakfast in Net 0. It was not friendly! The humans escaped damage: the net did not. It has been many years since we have experienced a Silver-haired Bat so this encounter proved fascinating. Happily after a brief rest, the bat clambered up a large tree branch and flew away. Most unfortunately, Peg and Rebecca went back to America about 10:30 but Karen and Angelo are still here so we expect to carry on as usual : ) !
D,K, & A wished you were here (sort of – we’d need more birds to have you truly useful even though we would certainly enjoy your company).
