Sunday, Aug 17

Today was our slowest day of the season so far – by one bird. Today also brought back the heat and humidity and so we spent much of the afternoon at the picnic table under the White Poplar – a bit cooler than the Werly Shed as at least we could get an occasional breeze. The weather shifted dramatically just before 7PM – instantly changing from south to north – and shortly thereafter a brief torrential rain storm hit, closing us down for the day. We were thrilled by the cooler temperatures and lower humidity this shift brought to our island.

Although our bird numbers were small we did have some interesting ones. Our first Chestnut-Sided and Black-throated Blue Warbler – both SY-M – plus another Bay-breasted Warbler, an Ovenbird, and our second Cedar Waxwing – a very young HY. Around the island Eleanor spotted a Willet at Broad Cove and many of us scooted down there to see it.

I’ll be leaving the island tomorrow but will be back on September 1st for the end of the season. I look forward to many more birds, and island adventures.

Goodbye for now – Rebecca, Peg, David, Karen, Eleanor, and Lilah
