Today brought a much welcome shift in the weather – slightly cooler temperatures, less humidity, and a bit of a cool-ish breeze. It was a much appreciated change!

The weather change did not bring more birds, however. It was another slow day – very typical of this time of year on Appledore – and so we dug deeply into any intriguing birds we did catch, took care of station tasks, and did some birding around the island. Some highlights included our first Least Flycatcher, our first Common Yellowthroat that was not a return from a past season, and 2 Song Sparrows. We are hearing and seeing more and more Cedar Waxwings in the shrubs and trees by the net lanes, and so are hopeful that at least one will appear in the nets sometime soon.
Peg and Rebecca made a foray to Broad Cove and were thrilled to see 4 Ruddy Turnstones in various stages of transition from breeding plumage to winter plumage, 4 Least Sandpipers, and 2 Semi-palmated Plovers. And one Black Guillemot.

Over the course of our slow afternoon we enjoyed some conversation and reading and quiet time in the shade of the White Poplar. Given our long days, and often being too busy for much beyond the tasks of the station, it is lovely when we can more fully bask in a beautiful day on the island, some relaxation, and more far ranging conversations with our AIMS friends
Goodnight for now – Rebecca, Peg, David, Karen, Eleanor, & Lilah.
